Due to the rapid growth of non-volatile memory (the type that retains its content even when not powered) and demand for portable technologies such as notebooks, ultrabooks, 2-in-1, 3.5-inch hard drives are no longer considered to be a traditional storage. Smaller 2.5-inch hard drives dominate in modern electronics. New SATA SSDs set the trend for slimmer standards – only 7mm-thick, forcing older technologies such as standard 2.5-inch hard disk drives, that are usually come 12.5mm-thick, go on a diet. To keep up with new demands Toshiba announced a release of new slim hard drives, which will go under existing line of products, L200.
If you have used thin 2.5-inch hard disk drives, you probably know that they tend to be slow and have a smaller capacity. With rotation speed 5400 rpm and cache of only about 8MB natural limitations become evident. However, Toshiba is implementing new methods of storing information: Perpendicular Magnetic Recording, Tunnel magnetoresistance, and Shingled Magnetic Recording. The later equip hard drives with a record of such density that allows creating volumes up to 2TB, and yet produce faster read/write speeds than HDD produced by competitors.
Expect to find these hard drives on the shelves next month. Prices for 500GB models are predicted to be around £40. While Western Digital Blue Mobile hard drives in similar form-factor and capacity cost about £33 and HGST Travelstar Z5K500 are about £30. We hope that suggested improvements will justify that difference in price. There is very little know about the energy consumption of Toshiba’s newcomers, but rumor has it that it will be lower than traditional hard drives.
Naturally, it does not come even close to trendsetter, SSD alternative, in terms of speed and reliability, hence, cannot be seriously considered as an upgrade (by any means it will not make your existing computer slimmer). But if you are lucky to have one of those new thin laptops, but you were not particularly happy with capacity and speed of its storage – pop into our London laptop repairs service, so we can install this novelty into your computer.
